The ultimate guide to men's walking trousers 2023

How to choose your perfect pair

Fit varies widely between different brands and models, as well as across the range of sizes and leg lengths. So it’s well worth trying on a few pairs to get your choice just right. Features range from minimalist to comprehensive and include pockets, vents, adjustors and attachments. A few pockets can be very handy, especially those with zips for keeping valuables safe. Look for multiple panels and an articulated cut to ensure comfortable and unrestricted movement, especially if you’ll be walking in mountainous areas with steep terrain.

The best fabric for your walks will depend on the conditions you expect to encounter. Lighter weight fabrics are cooler and more breathable in warm weather, but may not be as durable as more traditional heavy duty walking trousers. Look for those with reinforced panels in high wear areas such as the knees, seat and pockets, which will help them last for longer. Team a basic pair of trousers with a cosy baselayer in winter and some waterproof overtrousers in wet weather to add versatility.

Craghoppers’ Kiwi walking trousers have been around since 1996, which is testament to their functional, everyday styling and hardwearing but comfortable construction. Over the years the fabrics, fit and features have been refined, so they’re now even better to walk in and have a lower impact on the environment. These versatile softshell trousers are designed for walking and travel. The light and stretchy yet durable nylon/elastane mix fabric is both bluesign certified and partially recycled. The cut is slim but not restrictive through the leg, with a little more room around the seat and waist for comfort. Being more fitted than some on test, they’re best suited to warmer weather walking as they won’t easily accommodate a base layer underneath. Alongside the two standard side pockets there’s a handy zipped back pocket for secure storage. All Jack Wolfskin products are PFC-free and Fair Wear certified.
