Walking through the new Chinese quarter

Start:

Step out from the home of Sheffield United.

If you are a football fan, this could well be the walk for you. There are lots of opportunities for post match analysis (any match!) both during and after the walk. Because the start point (John Street/Bramall Lane) is in the heart of the city, this walk inevitably includes a lot of street walking. However, there are greenspaces near-by to explore and little pocket parks to surprise you. After the walk we return to the Sheffield United family Hub for a brew and a chat. You may even, if you wish, enjoy a game of pool or table football while you are there.

Walkers enjoying a joke in Abbeyfield Park

Start:

Step out round Pitsmoor. We offer a choice of walks to make the most of local green spaces.

Are you free on Tuesday afternoons? Why not join us for a short, sociable, walk in the Pitsmoor area? Pitsmoor is perhaps not the first place you'd think of to walk because it is a built-up residential part of the city. However, Abbeyfield Park is a little green oasis. Better still it is a great starting point for walks in nearby green spaces including Roe Woods, Earl Marshall Recreation area and Burngreave Cemetery. We offer a choice of two walks each week. You can either take a short stroll around Abbeyfield Park, or a longer walk, at a brisker pace, in one of the local green-spaces. The short walk is suitable for prams, buggies and wheelchairs or mobility scooters. We all meet up after our walk inside Abbeyfield House for a chat and a brew.

Entrance to Norfolk Park

Start:

Step out round Norfolk Park

Norfolk Park is a green oasis near the centre of Sheffield and from the top of the park there is a wonderful view of the city. Why not end your week by joining us for a walk around the park? We use the wide tarmac drive for walking so it is a good surface to walk on in all but icy weather. However, the park is built into the hillside and isn't suitable for wheelchairs. Mobility scooters yes, but wheelchairs no. We return to the Centre in the Park for refreshments from the café after the walk and in sunny weather we like to sit outside on the patio and enjoy the view while we continue to swap jokes, stories and anecdotes.

Northfield Avenue entrance to Bolehills Park

Start:

Step out in Bolehills Park, Crookes.

Bolehills Park, Crookes, enjoys stunning views over the Rivelin Valley to Stannington and beyond. It also boasts good tarmac paths which provide a firm, even surface on which to walk. Why not join us as we start our week with a stroll around the park followed by a cuppa in the common room of the park pavilion. All newcomers will be made very welcome so do come and join us!

Endcliffe Park Cafe - our meeting point

Start:

Step out up the Porter Valley starting from Endcliffe Park Café.

Why not join us for a walk through Endcliffe Park, Bingham Park and maybe even into Whiteley Woods as we stroll beside the very picturesque River Porter. This is one of the prettiest green corridors in Sheffield and teems with wildlife. We regularly spot mandarin ducks, herons and even kingfishers on our walk. An advantage of this walk is that the paths are well surfaced as far as Hangingwater Road (just beyond the Shepherd's wheel), making it suitable for prams, buggies and wheelchairs. There are also plenty of benches to rest on if needed. We tend to do a linear walk. Outbound for 30 minutes at a pace that is comfortable before turning back to retrace our steps to the café. Most of us stay to continue the conversation over a cuppa after the walk. We'd love to have you join us!

Starting point for Gleadless Valley Walks

Start:

Step out into the Gleadless valley on a choice of short accessible walks.

We offer a choice of walks starting from the Terry Wright Community Hall, Newfield Green and returning there for a social chin-wag after our walk. The Gleadless valley has lots of green spaces to explore but it is hilly and the main walk inevitably finds at least one hill to climb. We also offer a flatter walk each week for the less energetic and this one is suitable for wheelchairs and mobility scooters. We meet in all weathers (except when it is slippery underfoot because of snow or ice) but in inclement weather we reserve the right to reduce walking time and increase the socialising time in the warm and dry! Our longest walk lasts up to an hour. There will be a cuppa waiting for you at the end of your walk - and if you are lucky - a biscuit or two too!

Hillsborough walkers setting out

Start:

Step out in Hillsborough Park

Why not join us on a Thursday morning for a sociable walk round Hillsborough Park at a speed that's comfortable for you? We start off this walk together as one big group and then break up to take a choice of longer or shorter routes to the walled garden. In the shelter of the beautifully maintained gardens we re-group, rest on the many benches and continue our conversations before finally returning to Hillsborough Arena for a cup of tea or coffee. This group doesn't always walk in the park. They have a programme of monthly off-site walks to ring the changes. The events listing will however include the name Hillsborough walk even when they are walking elsewhere.

Start:

Step out in and around Firth Park for a choice of short accessible walks

We offer a choice of walks in the Firth Park area on Mondays starting from the First Start Nursery in Firth Park. You can choose from a longer walk at a steady walking pace or a shorter one at a more leisurely pace. The routes for both walks vary from week to week. The longer walk for example might visit Longley Park, Concord Park or Wincobank Hill and will include inclines and occasionally some field or woodland paths. The short walk includes Firth Park itself and the immediate area around. We try to keep hills to a minimum but - hey, we live in Sheffield and hills are difficult to avoid! Both walks last approximately an hour. After the walk most of us return to Henrys café in the First Start Centre for refreshments. Henry's outside terrace is sheltered and therefore very popular with our walkers.

Walk starts at the TARA office, 29, Fairbarn Drive S6 5QH

Start:

Step out around Stannington. A choice of accessible short walks from outside the TARA office.

Stannington provides many opportunities for scenic walks. Unfortunately all of them involve hills! To get round this we usually provide a choice of walks, one being shorter and flatter than the other. The longer walk occasionally uses field paths and some of these have stiles. Walkers will be warned about this before they make their choice of walks. Both walks last approximately one hour. After our walk we enjoy a brew, a biscuit and a giggle back at the TARA office.

Start:

Step out from Wisewood Sports Centre to Wadsley Common

Why not join us on Thursday mornings for a walk from Wisewood Sports Centre? We offer a choice of walks each week. One walk always goes up on the Common where there are are multiple paths to explore and, on a clear day, the views in all directions are splendiferous! A slower, flatter walk is also available each week. Both walks return to the Riva café where we can continue our conversations over tea and biscuits.

Richmond walkers on the Trans Pennine Trail

Start:

Step out in the Richmond area for a short and accessible walk.

Why not join us for a walk in Richmond's lovely park, or maybe along the Trans Pennine Trail to Bowden Howstead wood and back via Castlebeck recreation ground. Both walks enjoy amazing long-distance vistas. We either walk as one group at the pace of the slowest or we offer two walks to better meet the needs of those attending. All walks end back at St Catherine's church by 3pm for refreshments. Most of the paths we use are wheels friendly. In very inclement weather we have been known to do just a very short walk and to enjoy a much longer period of time chatting in the church foyer with a cup of tea and a biscuit or two.

Step out in Graves Park for a choice of short, accessible walks

Why not start your week with a walk in the biggest public park in Sheffield? Graves Park has it all. Open spaces, woodland, lakes, an arboretum, and a lovely café with a sheltered rose garden outside. We offer a choice of two walks each week, both with routes that vary from week to week. One walk includes the perimeter of the park and includes some woodland walking and a fairly steep hill. The other walk, which is delivered at a slower pace, stays closer to the café and avoids the steepest of the hills. Both walks last approximately one hour before returning to the café after. Most of us stay for a drink after the walk so we can carry on with our conversations. You are very welcome to join us.

Come and explore Handsworth's green spaces with us on Tuesday afternoons. We start from the Methodist Church hall (upstairs meeting room) and offer a choice of walks to accommodate all levels of fitness. The longest walk usually lasts a full hour (occasionally slightly longer), and may include field and woodland paths. The shortest walk may include a rest stop in the park and uses routes that avoid steps and uneven ground. All walkers return to the Methodist Church hall after their walk where the volunteer walk leaders serve tea and coffee while walkers continue their conversations.

Forge Dam café is a great meeting point for a walk in the glorious Mayfield Valley (upstream) or, alternatively, in Whiteley Woods (downstream). Both walks provide a feast of wildlife to enjoy along the way. Each week we offer a choice of walks to suit all levels of ability. Walkers meet before the start in the wooden shelter to the right of the main building

Start:

Step out in Ecclesall Woods on one of a choice of walks

Sheffield has the very rare distinction of having a large area of ancient woodland well within the city boundary. Why not join us for a walk in these stunning woods? Abbey Lane and Whilowdale Road divide the woods into three distinct areas - creatively named Woods 1,2 and 3. Each of the three woods is sizeable and there is an abundance of wildlife in all of them waiting to be enjoyed, not to mention a carpet of wood bluebells in spring. In wood 3 for example our walk sometimes passes the heronry and in wood 2 there is the wood cutters grave to visit. We host two levels of walk on Thursday mornings, a shorter, slower walk and a longer pacier one. Both walks return to the start within the hour where refreshments, available from the Kiosk, can be enjoyed under cover but outside.

Walkers meeting in Community Centre car parkoMeeting point

Start:

Step out from Grenoside for a walk in the woods.

Why not begin your Thursday morning with a walk in the woods? Wheata Wood and Grenoside woods are just a short walk from our meeting point and provide shelter from the sun in summer and from the wind in winter whilst we walk. Every season in the woods brings its own delights from bluebells in the spring to glorious autumn colours in the fall. Our expert volunteer walk leaders know the woods like the back of their hands so routes vary from week to week. Walkers set out as a single group with the option to cut the walk short on request. This walk is not suitable for prams, pushchairs or wheelchairs. After the walk we return to the Community Hall for refreshments in the downstairs meeting room.

Start:

Are you free on Friday afternoons? Why not join us for a walk in the Woodhouse area? We offer a choice of two walks each week with a variation in routes from week to week. One walk goes down into the Shirebrook Valley nature reserve to walk and this walk generally lasts 60-75 minutes. The other group stays up in the village using the green spaces there. This walk generally lasts 40-50 minutes and largely avoids both hills and mud. We return to the Salvation Army Community Hall after our walk to enjoy a drink and biscuit and to continue our conversations. It is a great way to end your week.

Lowedges walkers starting out from the Meeting Rooms

Start:

Step out around Greenhill Park, Lowedges.

Greenhill Park in Lowedges is situated right on the city boundary and has the rare advantage of being almost flat. All it's paths are tarmac ones and this walk is therefore wheels friendly and ideal for prams, pushchairs, strollers, wheel chairs and ride-on buggies. Several of the walkers bring their dogs to this walk and the dogs enjoy meeting up and socialising just as much as the walkers, possibly because the walkers make a big fuss of them all! Whilst it is possible to stride out in the park and beyond, at the present time this walk does not offer a longer, brisker walk. However, if you are looking for a gentle stroll with pleasant company on even paths in an open green area with no hills - this could well be the walk for you! Come and give us a try. After the walk we return to the Meeting Rooms to continue our conversations over a cuppa.

Walkers gathering outside Christchurch.

Start:

Step out around Owlthorpe, Hackenthorpe and Ochre Dyke.

Our start point not only has excellent transport links but we can walk in any direction and very quickly find green spaces and nature. So why not come and join us? We offer three levels of walk all of which return to Christchurch within the hour. The striders do just as the name suggests and their walk might include uneven ground, mud, inclines, steps and, very occasionally, a stile. Strollers tend to stick to firm surfaces but don't hang about and those who prefer a more sedate pace can join the slowest walk which is potentially suitable even for wheel chair users. Ken's tea-mashing is legendary and we all look forward to a drink and and a natter in the church hall after our walk.

Start:

Step out around Dore. A choice of accessible short walks from Christ Church Community Hall.

Our starting point is ideal for walks to local beauty spots including Blackamoor and Old Hay Brook and, when ground conditions allow, might involve some field walking and the occasional stile on the longer of our walks. We also offer a shorter walk for those who prefer a flat walk on a firm surface. The shorter walk is conducted at a stately pace and is suitable for prams, buggies and wheelchairs. An important part of both walks is the opportunity to mix and socialise and we encourage walkers to return to Dore Community Hall after their walk to continue their conversations over a cuppa.

Meeting point outside Totley library

Start:

Step out in and around Totley on one of a choice of accessible walks

Totley is ideally situated for semi-rural and woodland walks. Each week we offer a choice of walks. The main walk might include field and woodland paths. This option usually involves a hill or two and occasionally includes one or more stiles. In wet weather you will probably encounter some mud too. We always offer a flatter slower walk in addition to the main one. The slower walk never uses stiles, rarely tackles steps, and always uses firm paths. The slower walk also tends to incorporate a 'scenery stop' along the way at some point too and is pram, buggy and wheelchair friendly. The library provides tea and coffee making facilities plus a dedicated socialising space for after the walk. There is a nearby café that is also popular with our walkers, enabling them to continue their conversations long after the walk has ended! Come and join us - we'll make you very welcome.
